As reported earlier this weekend, a leaked clip of a local ad for a WWE live event in Jonesboro, Arkansas circulated promoting an “Intergender Special Attraction” featuring Nia Jax and Dean Ambrose. Well, it turns out the match isn’t happening.
According to John Pollock of Post Wrestling, the ad is “outdated” and the match won’t take place. This seems to imply the match was on the table at some point, but the report confirmed the clip was “incorrect.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time that WWE promoted a match that didn’t make the card. That’s the nature of the business. That said, what makes this interesting is it still suggests WWE had plans to test the waters with intergender wrestling.
The promotion planted the seeds for this matchup on an episode Monday Night Raw, and they made the rumored match a centerpiece of their promotional material. So, apparently this was going to be more than a one-off experiment. Otherwise, it’s hard to imagine why the match would’ve made it into a published advertisement.
It’s unclear why they decided to go in a different direction because there are so many factors at play, including Ambrose’s impending departure. However, this may not be the last we hear of a potential intergender match.
The initial leak garnered a mixed reaction. Intergender wrestling is such a divisive subject among fans and the talent, but there seemed to be some genuine excitement around the possibility. Former Smackdown Live General Manager, Paige, took to Twitter to express her enthusiasm and pride in her friend’s current push.
She’s not alone, as there’s some positive buzz around potential intergender match-ups. If they do plan to revisit it in the future, they could capitalize on it all.
What do you think? Could there be an intergender match in the cards for WWE sometime soon? Drop a comment below.
